Over the years BSALA has been privileged and honoured to have had many eminent and highly respected leaders in the legal community address us and attend our various Annual Dinners and functions. Links to some of the events appear below.
2009
- October - Justice Albie Sachs - "The strange alchemy of life and law"
Justice Albie Sachs formerly a judge of the Constitutional Court of South Africa spoke on his book ‘The strange alchemy of life and law' an autobiographical work on his life and career. The event, hosted by BSALA, was held at SOAS in London on 27 October 2009 and was attended by an audience of more than 150.
- July - Talk on the African Court of Justice
Professor Christof Heyns, dean of the Faculty of Law at the University of Pretoria gave a talk entitled "The emerging African Court of Justice and Human Rights" at a meeting hosted by BSALA in London on 22 July 2009.
- June - Sir Sydney Kentridge shares some views from a lifetime at the Bar
BSALA was very pleased to have Sir Sydney Kentridge QC share some fascinating views and insights from his career spanning more than 60 years at the Bar in both South Africa and England. Sir Sydney spoke following the holding of the 2009 BSALA AGM in London on 9 June 2009.
- February - BSALA hossts screeningof "We are Together"
The annual BSALA film evening took place at South Africa House on 5 February 2009 at which the film ‘We are Together', an inspiring documentary about the journey of a children's choir from the AGAPE orphanage in South Africa, was screened. The screening was followed by a question and answer session with the producer, Mr Teddy Leifer.
2008
- June - BSALA Chair speaks at SA High Commission conference on legal process outsourcing to SA
BSALA Chairman, Seamus Smyth, spoke on the pros and cons of legal outsourcing to South Africa at a conference organised by the South African High Commission on legal process outsourcing to South Africa. The conference was held at South Africa House on 5 June 2008 and was attended by approximately 200 delegates.
- June - Mr FW de Klerk, former State President of South Africa speaks at the BSALA annual dinner
The guest speaker at the 2008 annual dinner of the British South African Law Association was the former State President of South Africa Mr FW de Klerk who spoke on "The Rule of Law in South Africa after 1994". The dinner was held in June 2008 at the Great Hall, Lincoln's Inn, London and was attended by approximately 150 guests.
2007
- November - BSALA hosts a reception at the exhibition of South African Artist Jodi Brennar
BSALA hosted a reception for its members and their guests at an exhibition by South African artist Jodi Brennar at the Art First Gallery in Mayfair London.
- September - BSALA hosts a screenof the film "Red Dust"
In September 2007 BSALA hosted a screening of the film ‘Red Dust' based on the book of the same name by Gillian Slovo, who also attended the event. After the screening of the event, Gillian Slovo said a few words about the film.
- July - BSALA hosts talk on the South African constitution
Professor Francois du Bois of the University of Cape Town delivered a lecture on "The radiating effect of the South African Constitution" at an event hosted by BSALA in July 2007.
2006
- October - George Bizos SC address the issues of amnesty
BSALA hosted a talk by well known South African human rights lawyer George Bizos SC under the heading "Is Amnesty a substitute for justice?" The event was attended by about 150 people and was held at South Africa House in London.
- September - Talk on Black Economic Empowerment in South Africa
Well known South African business man and political leader, Tokyo Sexwale, gave an insightful update on black economic empowerment in South Africa. The event was hosted by BSALA and took place at South Africa House in London.
